About the Barcode Generator
Choose a format, type the value and the barcode is drawn straight away. Six symbologies are available: Code 128 and Code 39 for text labels, and EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 for product and carton numbers. You can set the bar width (1 to 4 pixels per module), the height, the bar and background colours, and whether the value is printed underneath. A blank margin of 11 modules is kept on both sides, because scanners need that quiet zone.
The four numeric formats end in a check digit calculated with the GS1 mod-10 rule. Type the number without its last digit and the tool adds the check digit for you; type the full number and it is verified. If the last digit is wrong, you get a message with the correct digit instead of a barcode that will not scan. For example, entering 400638133393 as EAN-13 produces 4006381333931.
The generator draws bars; it does not issue numbers. Shops and marketplaces generally expect EAN and UPC numbers that were allocated through GS1, so use the number you were given. For your own stock labels, asset tags or library cards, Code 128 with your own codes is usually the simplest choice. Limitations
- Code 128 uses character set B only (printable ASCII). Digit-only data is not compressed, so long numbers make wider barcodes, and GS1-128 application identifiers are not supported.
- No UPC-E, no EAN or UPC add-on digits (such as the 5-digit price add-on on books) and no 2D codes such as Data Matrix or PDF417.
- ITF-14 is drawn without the bearer bar frame often printed around carton barcodes. Add one in your label design if your customer requires it.
- The text under EAN and UPC barcodes is a single centred line, not split into the usual digit groups beside the guard bars.
- Low-contrast or light-on-dark colour choices may not scan. Black bars on a white background are the safest option.
Privacy
Barcodes are drawn by JavaScript in your browser; the values you type are not sent to FlexyPdf or any other server.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to type the check digit?
No. Enter 12 digits for EAN-13, 7 for EAN-8, 11 for UPC-A or 13 for ITF-14 and the check digit is added. If you type the full number, the tool checks the last digit and tells you the correct one if it does not match.
Which barcode format should I use?
EAN-13 is used on retail products in most countries and UPC-A mainly in the USA and Canada. EAN-8 suits very small packs, and ITF-14 marks outer shipping cartons. For internal labels with letters and numbers, Code 128 is compact and widely supported; use Code 39 only if an older system requires it.
Can I make an ISBN barcode for a book?
Yes. An ISBN-13 is an EAN-13 number starting with 978 or 979, so choose EAN-13 and type the digits without hyphens. The separate 5-digit price add-on is not supported.
Where do I get an EAN or UPC number for my product?
Product numbers are allocated through GS1 and its national member organisations. This tool only draws the barcode for a number you already have; it cannot register or assign one.
Why does Code 39 change my text to capitals?
Code 39 has no lowercase letters. It encodes A to Z, 0 to 9, space and the symbols - . $ / + %, so letters you type are converted to uppercase.
