About the Meta Tag Generator
Every page’s <head> needs a few tags that visitors never see on the page itself but meet everywhere else: the title and description in search results, the headline and image when a link is shared on WhatsApp, LinkedIn or X, and hints for search engines such as the canonical URL. This generator turns a short form into those tags, correctly escaped and ready to paste into your template.
The Editor tab collects the values. Counters next to the title and description flag lengths outside common guidelines, roughly 30–60 characters for a title and 120–160 for a description. These are rules of thumb for avoiding truncation, not limits set by Google, which shortens and sometimes rewrites snippets depending on the search and the screen. The Preview tab shows an approximate search result and a social card layout, and the Code tab shows exactly what will be copied.
The output contains charset and viewport tags, the <title>, the description, robots and theme-color meta tags, a canonical link, Open Graph tags (og:type, og:title, og:description, og:url and og:image) and X card tags. The title and description are reused for the social tags, so you only type them once. A Keywords field exists for sites whose own search still reads it, but Google ignores the keywords meta tag, so the field is empty by default and the tag is left out unless you fill it in.
To see where a long title is likely to be cut off, try the SEO Title Analyzer. To size a share image, use Resize Image.
How to use the Meta Tag Generator
- 1
Fill in Basic SEO
Enter the page title and description, choose a Robots setting and add the canonical URL. Keywords, author and theme colour are optional.
- 2
Fill in Social Media
Add the full URL of a share image, pick an OG type (website, article or profile) and an X card style, and optionally your site’s @username.
- 3
Check the previews
Open the Preview tab to see an approximate search result and the social card layout.
- 4
Copy the tags
Click Copy Meta Tags and paste them inside the head of your page. Reset restores the example values.
What it can do
Escaped output
Quotation marks, ampersands and angle brackets in your text are escaped, so they can’t break the HTML.
Open Graph and X cards
Social tags are generated from the same title, description and image, so they stay consistent.
Length guidance
Live character counts for the title and description, labelled short, good or long.
Approximate previews
A search-result mock-up and a social card layout that update as you type.
URL checks
Warns when the canonical or image URL is not a full address starting with http:// or https://.
Optional tags left out
Empty optional fields such as keywords, author and X username produce no tag at all.
Limitations
- Previews are approximations. Search engines may shorten or rewrite titles and descriptions, and each social network crops images and text its own way.
- The share image is not loaded or checked. Make sure it is publicly reachable and large enough; 1200 × 630 pixels is a widely used size.
- Only the website, article and profile OG types and the two summary card styles are offered; product, video or app tags must be added by hand.
- It creates tags for one page at a time and cannot read the tags of an existing page.
- Structured data (JSON-LD) is not generated.
Privacy
Everything you type stays in your browser: the tags are built locally, nothing is sent to FlexyPdf, and the image URL is not fetched.
Frequently asked questions
Do meta keywords help my ranking?
Not on Google, which has ignored the keywords meta tag for years. Some internal site-search tools still read it, which is the only reason the field is here. It is optional and left out of the output when empty.
Why add a canonical URL?
When the same content can be reached at several addresses, for example with tracking parameters or both with and without www, the canonical link tells search engines which address you prefer to have indexed. Use the full URL, including https://.
What image size works for social sharing?
A landscape image of about 1200 × 630 pixels is widely used for Open Graph and for the large-image X card. Keep important text away from the edges, because apps crop differently, and give a full https:// URL.
When should robots be set to noindex?
Only for pages you don’t want in search results, such as thank-you pages, internal search results or staging copies. Index, Follow is what search engines do anyway when the tag is absent. Remember that noindex only works if crawlers can fetch the page, so don’t also block it in robots.txt.
Do I need both Open Graph and twitter tags?
X falls back to the Open Graph title, description and image, but it needs twitter:card to choose the card style. Including both, as this generator does, gives predictable results across platforms.
