About the File Viewer

Drop a file to see what it is and what is inside, without installing an app. The viewer shows the file name, size, MIME type and last-modified date, then picks a preview based on the file extension and type:

Images (PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, BMP, ICO, AVIF and others your browser supports) and SVG drawings are displayed as pictures. SVG files are shown as an image, so any scripts inside them cannot run. Video and audio files get a player. PDFs open in your browser's built-in PDF viewer. JSON is pretty-printed with indentation when it is valid. CSV files become a table, with quoted fields, commas and line breaks inside quotes handled correctly. Text and code files (TXT, Markdown, logs, XML, YAML, JavaScript, Python, SQL and many more) are shown as plain text, and HTML is shown as source code rather than rendered.

This is handy when a colleague sends a .json or .csv export and you want a quick look, when you are not sure whether a file is really an image, or when you are on a computer without a code editor. For example, drop a CSV export from a bank or shop and its rows appear as a table you can scroll through, with the first row as headers.

The viewer only displays files. To reformat or edit data, the JSON Formatter and CSV to JSON tools go further. Copy puts the text of text-based files on your clipboard, and Download saves the same file again.

How to use the File Viewer

  1. 1

    Open a file

Drop any single file on the drop area or click Browse Files. Files up to 50 MB are accepted.

  2. 2

    Check the details

Read the Name, Size, Type and Last Modified boxes at the top.

  3. 3

    View the preview

Scroll through the image, player, PDF, table or text below. A message tells you if the format cannot be previewed.

  4. 4

    Copy or download

For text-based files, click Copy to copy the whole content. Download saves the file again under its original name.

What it can do

File details

Name, size, MIME type and last-modified date of the file.

Many preview types

Images, SVG, video, audio, PDF, plain text, source code, JSON and CSV.

Formatted JSON

Valid JSON is re-indented with 2 spaces; invalid JSON is shown as it is.

CSV table

A proper CSV parser turns the file into a scrollable table with a sticky header row.

Safe SVG display

SVG is shown through an image element, which does not run embedded scripts.

Limitations

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ZIP and most camera RAW files cannot be previewed; the viewer shows their details only.
  • What plays depends on your browser: HEIC photos, TIFF images or some video codecs may not display, and PDFs need a browser with a built-in PDF viewer (many phones do not have one).
  • Large text files show only the first 500,000 characters, and CSV previews show the first 1,000 rows.
  • CSV files must use commas; semicolon- or tab-separated files appear as single columns.

Privacy

The file is read and displayed by your browser on your device; it is not uploaded to FlexyPdf's servers.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The browser reads the file locally and the preview is built in the page. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Can it open Word or Excel files?

No. Those formats need a document library to render, so the viewer only shows their name, size and type. For Excel data, save it as CSV first and open that.

Why does my HTML file show code instead of the web page?

HTML is deliberately shown as source code. Rendering an unknown page inside this site could run its scripts, so the safer option is to display the markup.

Why won't my PDF show on my phone?

The preview uses the browser's built-in PDF viewer, which many mobile browsers do not have. Use Download to open it in a PDF app instead.

Why is my CSV shown in one column?

The file probably uses semicolons or tabs as separators, which is common in some regional spreadsheet settings. The viewer splits on commas only; CSV to JSON lets you pick semicolon, tab or pipe separators.
