Frequently Asked Questions

Complementary uses two colours from directly opposite sides of the colour wheel — maximum contrast, often visually intense. Split-complementary takes one base colour and the two colours adjacent to its complement, which gives the same vibrancy with less harshness. For most UI work, split-complementary is the safer choice.
When you have a fixed brand colour you must include but want the algorithm to suggest harmonious companions. Lock the brand colour, then click Generate until the rest of the palette feels right.
Analogous (3 colours next to each other on the wheel) is calm and natural — good for backgrounds and brand identity. Triadic (3 colours equally spaced) is balanced and energetic. Complementary is high-contrast for hero sections. Monochromatic is single-hue with varying lightness — perfect for minimalist designs.
Click "Copy All" to get the HEX values as a comma-separated list ready to paste into Figma, Tailwind config, or a CSS variables file. For individual swatches, click any colour to copy just that HEX.
Harmony does not guarantee accessibility — two colours can be harmonious and still fail WCAG contrast ratios. Always run your final text-on-background combinations through the [Contrast Checker](/tools/contrast-checker) before shipping.
The [Color Picker](/tools/color-picker) helps you choose a single colour and see its values in every format. The Palette Generator helps you build a complete multi-colour scheme around one or more base colours. Use them in sequence: pick a colour, then generate a palette from it.
