Free Online PDF Editor

Annotate, sign, and edit PDF files in your browser

Our free online PDF Editor lets you annotate, sign, and edit PDF documents directly in your browser — no software to install, no files uploaded to any server. Add text boxes anywhere on the page, highlight important passages in yellow, green, blue, or red, draw freehand with the pencil tool, insert rectangles, circles, arrows, and lines, and embed images or digital signatures. Need to reorganize your document? Rotate, duplicate, delete, or reorder pages with drag-and-drop thumbnails. Every edit is reversible with unlimited undo and redo. When you are done, export a clean, standards-compliant PDF in seconds. For even smaller file sizes, use the Optimize export to automatically compress embedded images. All processing happens 100% locally using pdf-lib and PDF.js — your document never leaves your device. Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android in any modern browser.

Features

  • Text Annotations

Add formatted text boxes anywhere on the page. Choose font size, color, bold, italic, and alignment. Text is embedded as real PDF content — readable in any viewer.

  • Highlight & Draw

Highlight passages with 6 color presets, draw freehand with the pencil, or insert rectangles, circles, arrows, and lines to mark up documents precisely.

  • Digital Signatures

Draw your signature on a canvas pad or upload a PNG/JPG image. The signature is placed as a resizable, rotatable image annotation at the bottom of the page.

  • Page Management

Rotate, duplicate, delete, or insert blank pages. Reorder pages by dragging thumbnails. All structural changes use pdf-lib and preserve the original page content.

  • Undo / Redo History

Every annotation action is tracked in a 30-step history. Press Ctrl+Z to undo or Ctrl+Y to redo. History resets cleanly when a new file is loaded.

  • Optimized PDF Export

Standard export embeds annotations at full quality. Optimized export compresses JPEG images to 70% quality — ideal for reducing file size before emailing or uploading.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I edit text in a PDF online for free?

Open the PDF Editor and select the Text tool (T) from the toolbar. Click anywhere on the page to place a text box. Type your content, then format it with the font size, color, bold, italic, and alignment controls. Click outside to deselect, then export your edited PDF. Note: this adds a new text annotation on top — it does not alter the original text layer of the PDF.

Can I add a signature to a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?

Yes. Click the "Sign" button in the toolbar to open the Signature tool. Draw your signature with a mouse or touchscreen on the signature pad, or upload a PNG/JPG image of your handwritten signature. Click Insert to place it on the page, then drag and resize it to the correct position. Export the PDF to save the embedded signature.

Is this PDF Editor completely free?

Yes, completely free with no limits, no watermarks, no sign-up, and no hidden fees. You can edit, annotate, sign, and export as many PDF files as you need without any cost.

Are my PDF files safe? Is anything uploaded to a server?

Your files never leave your device. The entire PDF Editor runs in your browser using PDF.js for rendering and pdf-lib for exporting. No data is sent to any server — not the original file, not the annotations, not the exported PDF. This makes it safe for confidential documents, contracts, and personal files.

What is the maximum PDF file size?

The PDF Editor accepts files up to 50 MB. Since all processing happens in your browser, performance depends on your device. For very large files (30–50 MB), use a modern desktop browser for the best experience. Consider using our PDF Compressor to reduce a large PDF before editing.

Can I edit multiple pages in one session?

Yes. You can add, move, resize, and delete annotations on any page in the document. The thumbnail sidebar lets you jump between pages instantly. Use the "Copy to All Pages" button to apply a header, footer, watermark, or signature to every page at once.

Does the PDF Editor work on mobile and tablets?

Yes, the editor is fully responsive and works on iOS and Android browsers. Touch events are supported for drawing, dragging annotations, and resizing. For complex editing sessions, a desktop or laptop is recommended for a more comfortable experience.

What is the difference between Save PDF and Optimize?

"Save PDF" embeds all annotations at their original quality. "Optimize" additionally compresses JPEG images embedded in the PDF (such as signatures or inserted photos) to 70% quality, which can significantly reduce the final file size without visible quality loss for most documents.
