PDF was designed to freeze a document so it looks the same everywhere — which is exactly the problem when you actually need to edit the contents. Our PDF to Word converter unfreezes a text-based PDF back into an editable .docx file you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, or Pages. It rebuilds paragraphs, headings, bulleted and numbered lists, simple tables, inline images, and basic font styles, so the result is a working document rather than a single-line text dump. The realistic expectation matters here: PDFs created by exporting from Word or a layout app convert almost perfectly because the underlying text is structured. PDFs that started life as a scanned paper document are images of text, not text — those need OCR first (use our OCR Tool to extract the text, then paste into Word). Multi-column layouts, footnotes, and complex table cells with merged spans are the hardest cases and may need cleanup after conversion. Common workflows: pulling an old contract back into Word to update a clause, converting a vendor invoice template so finance can edit the line items, recovering the editable source of a report when the original .docx file has been lost, extracting text from a research paper for quotation and citation, and turning a CV PDF into a Word version for an ATS that rejects PDFs. Everything runs in your browser; the document never leaves your device, which matters when the PDF is a contract, payslip, or anything else you would not want sitting on a third-party server.

Frequently Asked Questions

PDFs use absolute positioning (each character has X/Y coordinates), while Word uses flowing text. The converter has to reconstruct the flow, which works perfectly for single-column linear documents and gets approximate for multi-column layouts, complex tables, or pages with text wrapped around images. Expect minor cleanup on layout-heavy pages.
Not directly. A scanned PDF is technically an image embedded in a PDF wrapper — there is no text data to convert. Use our OCR Tool first to extract the text from the scan, then paste the result into a Word document. For high-volume scanned conversion, dedicated OCR-to-Word software (Adobe Acrobat Pro, ABBYY FineReader) is the right tool.
Simple tables with rectangular cells convert well — borders, column widths, and cell text are preserved. Complex tables with merged cells, nested tables, or cells spanning multiple rows often need manual fixup in Word after conversion. If your PDF table is critical, scan-test one page first.
Fonts that are standard system fonts (Arial, Times, Calibri, Helvetica) carry over by name and render identically. Custom or licensed fonts embedded in the PDF are mapped to the closest available system font, which can shift line breaks slightly. Font sizes, weights, italics, and colors are always preserved.
