A watermark is the difference between a document that quietly walks out of your inbox and one that announces itself wherever it ends up. Our free online PDF Watermark tool stamps custom text across every page of a PDF — diagonally, horizontally, behind the content, or above it — without uploading the file anywhere. Drag in your PDF, type the words you want stamped (CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, your client name, "© 2026 Acme Corp"), pick the position, rotation, opacity, font size, and color, and click Apply. The new watermarked PDF is generated entirely in your browser using pdf-lib and offered as a download. Because the operation runs locally there is no upload limit, no daily quota, and no risk of a private contract being cached on someone else's server. Watermarks are written as real PDF content — embedded text drawn onto each page rather than baked into a flattened image — so they remain crisp at any zoom level, are searchable in PDF readers, and stay vector-sharp when printed. You can choose between placing the watermark above the existing content (so it visibly overlays the document) or behind it (so the original text and images remain perfectly legible while the watermark sits as a faint background mark). Opacity is adjustable from fully transparent to fully opaque; most users settle around 20–30% for a tasteful effect that does not make the document hard to read. Rotation is freeform from 0 to 360 degrees, with 45-degree diagonal being the most common choice for "DRAFT" or "CONFIDENTIAL" stamps that need to be unmistakable. Font size scales with page dimensions, and you can pick a color that contrasts with the document background — light grey for white pages, dark grey for printed-on-color reports. Common use cases include marking pre-release contracts as DRAFT to prevent them from being mistaken for the final version, watermarking client deliverables with your studio name, branding case studies with company logos, labelling internal financial reports as INTERNAL USE ONLY, and adding copyright notices to e-books and creative portfolios. The tool processes the entire PDF in one pass, applies the watermark to every page (or to a selected page range when that option is enabled), and preserves the original page order, fonts, and embedded resources. Nothing about the original content is altered — the watermark is added as an additional layer.

Three real-world workflows. (1) **A law firm circulating contract drafts**: every page gets a 30% opacity diagonal "DRAFT — NOT FOR EXECUTION" stamp, which prevents an early version from ever being mistaken for the signed final. (2) **A photographer sending a portfolio PDF to a prospective client**: a discreet "© 2026 Studio Name" mark in the corner of every page protects the work without ruining the visual presentation. (3) **An internal finance team distributing a quarterly report**: a subtle "CONFIDENTIAL — INTERNAL USE ONLY" watermark behind the content reminds anyone who downloads it that the contents are not for external sharing.

Why use this instead of Adobe Acrobat or paid PDF editors? Adobe Acrobat Pro is the gold standard, but it costs around $20/month and is overkill if all you need is to stamp a few documents. Online services like Smallpdf and iLovePDF offer watermarking but require uploading your PDF to their servers — a non-starter for sensitive contracts and internal reports. This page does the same job locally in your browser with vector text quality that matches Acrobat's output. For multi-step workflows, pair it with the [PDF Password](/tools/pdf-password) tool to add encryption alongside the watermark, the [PDF Compressor](/tools/compress-pdf) to keep file sizes manageable for email, or the [PDF Editor](/tools/pdf-editor) for tools that require more than a stamp — annotations, signatures, page management. Together they cover almost every PDF post-processing need without ever uploading a file.

How to Use PDF Watermark

1

Drop Your PDF

Drag your PDF onto the upload area or click to browse. The file is parsed in the browser using pdf-lib and a thumbnail preview is generated.

2

Enter Watermark Text

Type the text you want stamped on every page. Common choices: CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, your company name, or a copyright string.

3

Adjust Position, Rotation & Opacity

Pick a position (center, top-left, bottom-right, etc.), set rotation (45° diagonal is the classic look), and slide opacity to 20–30% for a subtle background mark.

4

Apply and Download

Click Apply Watermark. The tool walks every page, draws the text using the selected font and color, and offers the new PDF as a download.

Features

Vector Text Watermarks

Watermarks are real embedded text, not flattened images — sharp at any zoom level and searchable inside PDF readers.

Above or Behind Content

Choose whether the watermark sits above the page content (visible overlay) or behind it (subtle background mark that does not block reading).

Full Style Control

Adjust font size, color, opacity (0–100%), rotation (0–360°), and position. Preview is updated as you tweak each setting.

Batch Page Coverage

Apply to every page in one click, or restrict to a page range when you only need certain sections marked.

Local-Only Processing

The PDF never leaves your browser. Use it on highly confidential drafts without worrying about third-party caching.

Frequently Asked Questions

A determined user with the right desktop tools can usually remove a watermark from any PDF — that is true of every PDF watermarking tool, not just this one. Watermarks are a deterrent and an attribution signal, not DRM. For documents that must stay locked, combine the watermark with a password using our PDF Password tool.
The current version supports text watermarks only. Image-based watermarks (PNG/JPG logos) are on the roadmap. As a workaround, the PDF Editor lets you place an image annotation on each page manually.
It should not — watermarks are drawn as real PDF text using the embedded font, which means they render at vector resolution. If you see pixelation, you are likely viewing a rasterized preview thumbnail rather than the exported PDF. Open the downloaded file in a PDF reader to see the true result.
Yes — when the page range option is enabled, you can specify a list like "1, 3-5, 8" and the watermark will be applied only to those pages. Other pages are left untouched.
Marginally. Each page gains a few hundred bytes for the additional text object. A 100-page PDF typically grows by less than 50 KB, which is negligible compared to the original.
You will need to remove the password first (using the PDF Password tool with the original password), apply the watermark, and then re-protect it. The tool cannot decrypt PDFs whose password it does not know.
A built-in PDF base font (Helvetica) is used by default for maximum compatibility — every PDF reader can render it without needing the font embedded. Custom font upload is not currently supported.
