About the Speech to Text Converter
Pick a language, click the microphone button and start talking. Words appear in the transcript box as you speak: grey italic text is the browser's provisional guess, and it turns into normal text once a phrase is finalised. Click the button again to stop, then copy the transcript or save it as a .txt file.
The tool uses the Web Speech API built into your browser, so the recognition itself is done by the browser's speech service, not by FlexyPdf. In Chrome, that means your audio is sent to Google's servers to be transcribed; Edge and Safari rely on their own vendors' speech services, which may also process audio online. It is also why support varies: it works in current versions of Chrome and Edge, works with some limitations in Safari, and does not work in Firefox, where the page shows a "not supported in this browser" message and the microphone button is disabled.
It suits short dictation from a live microphone: drafting an email, capturing notes while your hands are busy, or getting a first draft of a paragraph down quickly. Speak clearly in a quiet room, and expect to tidy up afterwards, because punctuation and names are often missing or wrong. It cannot transcribe recordings or uploaded audio files. When you are done, paste the text into the Word Counter to check its length, or into the Markdown Editor to format it.
How to use the Speech to Text Converter

Choose a language
Select the language you will speak from the Language menu, for example English (India) or Hindi. Changing it while listening stops the current session.

Click the microphone
Click the round microphone button and allow microphone access when your browser asks. The button turns red while listening.

Speak
Talk at a normal pace. If the browser ends its session after a pause, the tool starts listening again automatically until you click stop.

Stop and keep your text
Click the button again to stop. Use Copy, Save .txt or Clear above the transcript.

Clear error messages
Explains a blocked microphone, a missing microphone, a failed connection to the speech service or an unsupported language.
Limitations
- Works in current Chrome and Edge, and in Safari with some limitations. Firefox does not support it, and some other Chromium-based browsers show the feature but cannot connect to a speech service.
- Live microphone input only: it cannot transcribe uploaded audio or video files.
- In Chrome, recognition needs an internet connection because it runs on Google's servers.
- Accuracy depends on your microphone, background noise, accent and vocabulary. There are no speaker labels or timestamps, and punctuation is often missing.
- The transcript cannot be edited in the box and is lost when you leave the page, so copy or save it first.
Privacy
FlexyPdf never receives your audio or your transcript. Recognition is done by your browser's speech service: Chrome sends the audio to Google's servers, and other browsers may send it to their vendor's service.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it say speech recognition is not supported?
Your browser does not provide the Web Speech API's recognition feature. Firefox is the most common case. Open the page in a current version of Chrome or Edge, or try Safari.
Can I upload an audio or video file to transcribe?
No. The browser feature this tool uses listens to a live microphone only, so there is no file upload and no way to feed it a recording directly.
Is my voice recorded or stored?
This page does not record or store audio, and nothing is sent to FlexyPdf. The audio goes to your browser's speech service for recognition (in Chrome, Google's), under that company's own privacy terms.
Why did it stop listening?
Browsers end recognition sessions after a pause or a time limit, and the tool restarts them while the button is red. It stops for good if microphone access is blocked, the connection to the speech service fails, or you click the button.
Does it add punctuation?
Often not, or only partly; that depends on your browser's speech service and language. Plan to add full stops, commas and capital letters when you edit the text.
