About the Words to Number
Type a number in words and the digits appear as you type: "forty-two thousand one hundred and ninety-five" becomes 42,195. The result is shown three ways: with international comma grouping, with Indian grouping (1,20,00,000 style) and as plain digits. The parser understands both international scales (thousand, million, billion, trillion, quadrillion) and Indian ones (lakh and crore, including the spellings lakhs, lac, lacs and crores). "One crore twenty lakh" gives 1,20,00,000, "one lakh crore" gives a one followed by twelve zeros, and "nineteen hundred and eighty-four" gives 1984. You can write "a hundred" or "a million", mix figures with words as in "1.5 million" or "15 lakh", and add decimals with "point": "three point one four" is 3.14 and "two point five million" is 2,500,000. Start with "minus" or "negative" for a negative number. Capital letters, hyphens, commas and the word "and" make no difference.
The parser is strict about word order so that a typo does not quietly produce a wrong number. "Twenty thirty" or "one two three" gives an error naming the word that does not fit, and so does any word it does not know. That makes it useful for double-checking an amount written on a cheque or in a contract, or for turning figures from a transcript or news report into digits. To go the other way, use Number to Words.

What it can do
Indian and international scales
Lakh and crore work alongside thousand, million, billion, trillion and quadrillion, including combinations such as "one lakh crore".
Decimals and negatives
Use "point" or "dot" followed by single digits, and "minus" or "negative" at the start.
Words and figures mixed
Inputs like "1.5 million", "15 lakh" or "3 hundred" are accepted.
Errors instead of guesses
Unknown words, repeated scales and impossible word orders are reported rather than added up anyway.
Limitations
- English number words only. Ordinals such as "twenty-first", fractions such as "half" or "three quarters", and words like "dozen" are not understood.
- Currency words such as rupees, paise, dollars or "only" are not recognised; remove them before converting.
- After "point", say each digit separately: "three point one four" works, "three point fourteen" does not.
- Results larger than 9,007,199,254,740,991 (about 9 quadrillion) are rejected because they cannot be shown exactly.

Frequently asked questions
How many zeros are there in a lakh and a crore?
A lakh has five zeros (1,00,000 = 100,000) and a crore has seven (1,00,00,000 = 10,000,000). Type "one crore" to see both groupings side by side.
Can I type "1.5 lakh" or "2.5 million"?
Yes. A figure followed by a scale word is multiplied out, so "1.5 lakh" gives 150,000 and "2.5 million" gives 2,500,000. "One point five lakh" works too.
Do I need to include "and" or hyphens?
No. "One hundred and five", "one hundred five" and "One Hundred Five" all give 105, and "forty-two" and "forty two" both give 42.
What does an error like "thirty" can't follow "twenty" mean?
Those words cannot appear next to each other in a single number, so the tool stops instead of guessing. Check for a missing scale word, as in "twenty thousand thirty", or a stray word.
Can it read an amount like "rupees five lakh only"?
Not as written. Remove "rupees" and "only" and enter "five lakh"; the result is 5,00,000 in Indian grouping.
