About the Number to Words
Type a number and it is written out in English words as you type: 42195 becomes "Forty-two thousand one hundred and ninety-five". The wording follows the British and Indian convention, with "and" after hundred and before a final part under 100 ("one thousand and five"), and hyphens in compound numbers such as twenty-one. Commas and spaces in what you type are ignored, so 1,25,000 and 125,000 both work.
You can choose between two numbering systems. The international system groups digits in thousands and uses million, billion and trillion. The Indian system uses lakh (1,00,000) and crore (1,00,00,000), so 12500000 reads "One crore twenty-five lakh" instead of "Twelve million five hundred thousand". Beyond 99 crore the crores repeat, as in everyday Indian usage: 1,00,00,00,00,000 is "One lakh crore".
Currency mode writes amounts the way they appear on cheques, invoices and receipts. It rounds to two decimal places and names the units, so 125000.50 with the Indian system and Rupees & paise becomes "One lakh twenty-five thousand rupees and fifty paise". Dollars and cents work the same way. Ordinal mode gives forms such as "twenty-first", and in Cardinal mode decimals are read digit by digit, so 3.14 is "three point one four". What it can do

Decimals and negative numbers
-273.15 becomes "Negative two hundred and seventy-three point one five".
Limitations
- Output is in English only.
- Up to 15 digits before the decimal point are supported, which is just under one quadrillion. Scientific notation such as 1e6 is not accepted.
- The style is fixed: "and" is always used, and there is no Title Case option or "Only" at the end. Add those yourself if your bank or form asks for them.
- Currency mode covers US dollars and Indian rupees only, and rounds half up to two decimal places, so 1999.999 becomes two thousand dollars.
- Ordinals need a whole number of zero or more; decimals and negative numbers show an error in Ordinal mode.

Frequently asked questions
How do I write a cheque amount in words in rupees?
Choose Currency, Indian (lakh, crore) and Rupees & paise, then type the amount. 15750 gives "Fifteen thousand seven hundred and fifty rupees". Many people then write it as "Rupees fifteen thousand seven hundred and fifty only"; adjust the wording to what your bank expects.
How much is a lakh and a crore?
One lakh is 1,00,000 (one hundred thousand) and one crore is 1,00,00,000 (ten million), which is also one hundred lakh.
Why does the result include "and"?
British and Indian English say "one hundred and five". In the US, "and" is often left out of whole numbers. The tool always includes it, so delete it if you need the US style.
How are decimals written?
In Cardinal mode, each digit after the point is read separately and trailing zeros are dropped: 2.50 is "two point five". In Currency mode the decimals become cents or paise: 2.50 is "two dollars and fifty cents".
What is the largest number it can convert?
999,999,999,999,999, the largest 15-digit number. In the international system that is nine hundred and ninety-nine trillion and so on; in the Indian system it is expressed in crores of crores.
